Motto: Audacter et Strenue (Boldly and earnestly)
The Pogue (originally Poague) family is of Scotch-Irish ancestry and migrated from Ireland to Orange County, Virginia, in 1740. The American branch the family descends from Robert and Elizabeth Pogue of Virginia. Early family members served in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. It is probable that these experiences allowed the early Pogues to see first-hand the richness and potential of the frontier area which is now Kentucky. Eventually the family expanded into Mason County and Maysville. Robert Pogue served in the colonial army, and fought in what is documented as the last battle of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Blue Licks, in Blue Licks, Kentucky, about 20 miles from Maysville. Robert Pogue served under Commandant James Todd (Mary Todd Lincoln’s Great Uncle), Daniel Boone, Jacob Boone, and Simon Kenton.
